PRESS RELEASE
NUJ (I) condemns police attack
on scribes in Jammu
New Delhi, August 4: The drastic curbs imposed upon the two
main news channels of Jammu, which also provide cable connection
for other leading news channels, and restrictions for covering
the current agitation in Jammu over the issue of land transfer
to Amarnath Shrine can only be compared to the black days of
emergency.Failing to find a solution of the vexed issue which
in a way is its own creation, the state administration in J&K
now under the central rule, has apparently run amuck in utter
confusion.
NUJ(I) finds it totally unacceptable that the state administration
should hold the media in Jammu responsible for creation of the
present volatile situation. The agitation earlier in Srinagar
and Kashmir valley over the land transfer to Amarnath shrine
issue, was widely covered by the media ,when popular government
was in power. No such wanton restrictions were imposed. But,when
the focus of the agitation has shifted to Jammu and the state
is under the central rule,a piquant situation with blatant media
curbs is thought to be the only to deal with the explosive situation. There
are reports of copies of some daily newspapers being snatched
by berserk cops who tore them and threw away.Further, mediapersons
covering the agiatation were brutally assulted leading to injuries.
I urge upon the Prime Minister Mr.Manmohan Singh to counsel
restraint to the Governor Mr.Vohra and instruct him to immediately
lift all curbs imposed on the media in Jammu. The confrontation
with the media shall only be counterproductive, which an ex-bureaucrate
Governor with unfettered powers, will not understand. The centre
has to act fast, before the media all over the country comes
on the street,in support of the mediamen of Jammu.Centre cannot
abdicate its responsibility at the present juncture, since J&K
is under its direct rule, and finally its is answerable to the
media and the country at large.
The NUJ(I) stand by the struggling mediapersons in Jammu, and
back their demand for immediate lift of all misconceived curbs. If
no responsible action was initiated by the centre forthwith, our
organisation shall give a call for observance of protest day
all over the country.Meanwhile a report has been sought from
our state unit over the latest situation.

NUJ (I) condemns
police attack on journalists in Orissa
New Delhi, July 17, 2008 : National Union of
Journalists (I) has strongly condemned the police attack on
journalists in Orissas Malkangiri district on Thursday.
A group of scribes from Andhra Pradesh, Orissa
and Chhatisgarh had been to the office of the district superintendent
of police in the morning to collect information on the Wednesday
attack on police personnel by the Maoists at MV-126 village,
nearly 40 km from the district headquarters.
The police, instead of cooperating in giving
information, asked the journalists to leave the place and resorted
to indiscriminate lathicharge without any provocation.
Three journalists Anil Reddy of TV Line,
Shiva Mosgul of NTV and Chery Bisal all from Andhra Pradesh
sustained injury in police assault.
The condition of Anil Reddy, according to medial
sources, is critical. Anil is undergoing treatment at the local
district headquarters hospital.
In a statement NUJ (I) president Mr P.K. Roy, secretary general
Mr Atamdeep and vice president Mr Prasanna Mohanty condemned
the attack as barbaric and demanded strong action
against the concerned police officials and termed the incident
as an effort to supress the freedom of press in the country.

NUJ(I)
seeks protection for Pak journalists
New Delhi, June 15:
Expressing solidarity with the Pakistani journalists facing
acts of killings, coercion and intimidation, the National Union
of Journalist (India) on Friday said that certain political
parties affiliated to the Musharraf government were specifically
targeting the independent media and were responsible for organised
attacks on journalists.
A large group of journalists assembled before the High Commission
at New Delhi and demanded that the Musharraf regime provide
enough protection to Pak journalists as also stop itself gagging
the media.
“We are alarmed at reports from news sources that political
bodies, often linked to your government, are the ones responsible
in generating fear and concern amongst journalists,” NUJ-I
President Dr NK Trikha said in a memorandum submitted to President
Musharraf through the Pakistan High Commission.
Dr Trikha said: “The Mohajir Rabita Council (MRC) of the
Mottahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), a political party aligned with
the Musharraf government, has released a list of twelve journalists
who have been identified as ethnic and linguistic “chauvinists”
and ‘enemies’. This list also includes some senior
office-bearers of the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalist.”
The NUJ memorandum to Pervez Musharraf came a day before the
first death anniversary of Pakistan journalist Hayatullah Khan
whose body was found dumped with bullet wounds in North Waziristan.
Expressing deep concern over the increasing dangers faced by
journalists in Pakistan and the growing restraints on the functioning
of the media in the country, the NUJ demanded stern action against
the culprits and asked the Musharraf government to provide adequate
protection to media persons there. In a peaceful and silent
demonstration outside the High Commission, the journalists carried
placards reading "Stop gagging Pak Press", Stop Killing
journalists in Pakistan", "Stop attacks on Pak Journalists"
and "We stand by Pak journalists."
